What to Do When You’re Facing a Dental Emergency
Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, and they often tend to occur at inopportune times. However, with a little know-how and a few simple tips, you can handle any dental emergency that might come your way. Whether your child has knocked out a tooth or you’re dealing with a severe toothache yourself, follow these guidelines to get the care you need.
Don’t Panic
Instances like knocked out teeth, abscesses, and lacerations in the soft tissues of the mouth can have a gruesome appearance, but it’s important to remain calm when dealing with these injuries. Calling your dentist right away can help you keep your cool and determine the right course of treatment for the situation. Your dentist may have you come into the office right away, or he may recommend heading to the ER for severe injuries or infections. In some cases, home treatment will be recommended until you can come in for a dental appointment.
Apply Pressure to Bleeding Areas
If you’re bleeding or have a knocked-out tooth, apply gentle pressure to the affected areas with clean gauze or a clean cloth. For cuts in the soft tissues such as the inner cheeks or lips, a cold compress can ease any discomfort once the bleeding is under control.
Preserve Any Lost Crowns or Teeth
In cases of lost teeth or lost crowns, preserve them and bring them to the dentist’s office for your emergency appointment, if possible. Broken or knocked out teeth may be kept in a glass of milk or in water on your way to the dentist. Never attempt to put a crown or a tooth back in place by yourself, as you could cause further injury or infection.
