Top Signs a Crown Is Failing

Capping a tooth with a porcelain crown is an effective way to preserve it and address damage such as severe fractures. At some point, however, patients will need to get the crown repaired or replaced. On average, a dental crown can last between five and 15 years, depending on one’s oral hygiene and mouth-related habits. If you have a dental crown, watch out for the following signs that it may be failing.

Pain or Tooth Sensitivity

Pain is never normal and should be checked out promptly by your dentist. If your crown needs an adjustment or perhaps a replacement, you may notice some pain on the crowned tooth. You might also have tooth sensitivity when consuming hot or cold beverages or foods. In addition, when you take a closer look at the tooth, you might notice some swelling and inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding it.

Gum Recession and Tooth Decay

When a dental crown is properly placed, it should be completely airtight and there should be no gaps between the crown and the natural tooth. Unfortunately, some patients may have improperly placed crowns that do have open edges. The open gap allows bacteria to enter and attack the natural tooth. This can cause tooth decay, although because the crown is covering the tooth, you won’t see the areas of decay. However, you may see signs of gum recession. The accumulation of bacteria along the gum line can result in the gums pulling away from the restoration.

Wear and Tear

Porcelain crowns are durable and hard, but they can still wear down over time. Your crown may wear down even more quickly if you have bruxism. Bruxism refers to teeth grinding, which often occurs involuntarily at night. When you receive your new crown, ask the dentist about wearing a custom-fitted nightguard to prevent teeth grinding.
